BALLY SPRING SUMMER 2018 MEN’S COLLECTION

Storytelling

Bally’s archive is rich with creative inspiration and once again the SS18 collection features elements of Bally’s past excellence.

More than in previous seasons, it is the archive that takes centre stage with the replica retro sneaker collection. These four sneakers, replicated for men and women, set the tone for the collection, taking us back to the 60s, 70s, and 80s when Bally was the sneaker brand people wanted to be seen in. The babouche collection again takes inspiration from the 60s with a Maelle buckle, inspired from a shoe found in the archive.

Bally Milan Showroom

Bally’s head office moved to its new home at Viale Piave, 42, in Porta Venezia’s Milanese landmark. The building offers 2,500 square meters of office and showroom space over three levels, housing Bally’s design, VM, merchandising and communications teams.

It was important to Bally to preserve the history within the walls of the new showroom, which in 1908 stood as the Kursaal theatre before it was transformed into a cinema from 1925 until its closure in 1989. The space and set, in which you see the SS18 collection presented today, restores the building’s natural essence, giving light to its theatrical qualities.

The Set

On entering the building we’ll encounter the glimmering New York skyline. The cityscape cloaks us in amber light as we take an immersive walk among the projector screens towards the main set.

Collection narrative – Men’s

The vibe of B-boys and B-girls; and artists from Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Eric B., and Rakim to DJs Afrika Bambaataa capture the energy of a culture shifting from disco to hip-hop.

The narrative of the collection

Urban sportswear shown through retro sneakers, lightweight cagoules, trousers tucked into socks, zipped tops, and canvas tote bags. A relaxed view to pairing creates a collection with the fluidity to take one piece and wear it in your own way.

Shoes: Bally’s retro sneakers are at the core, composed of four replicas of the brand’s most successful lace ups, from hip-hop era classics to tennis shoes and runners. The collection features four distinct styles: The Competition, The SuperSmash, The Galaxy, and the Vita-Parcours.

Accessories: the Bally Stripe is a feature across men’s accessories, seen on the adjustable straps within the sporty, tennis inspired Slam collection; as contrast detail on the classic vintage, leather luggage collection Marquee; and within the fabric straps on the Bold collection of canvas bags.

Ready-to-wear: Highlights include lightweight cagoules, corduroy trousers tucked into socks, double breasted coats, oversized trench, calf nappa padded puffa jackets, and zipped sporty tops.

Techniques, textures, and fabrics: Lamb shearling, Bally B printed silk, oversized trench with raglan sleeves and wide lapels in techno cotton, tracksuit bottoms in habotai silk, pullover jacket in paradise lamb nappa, carrot trousers in cotton corduroy, blouson in wool check, and cotton Tabio socks.

Retro Sneakers

The retro sneakers are the core of the SS18 collection – for both men’s and women’s. These four sneakers are the birthplace of inspiration that led to the creation of a narrative that authentically forms the DNA of this collection and the Bally brand.

Bringing back Bally’s best sneaker styles over the past decades, the collection includes four replications of its most successful lace ups, from hip-hop era classics to smashing tennis shoes and sporty runners.

SuperSmash (1965): Reissued with a vulcanised sole and the same Bally logo on the side, the canvas shoes are available as replicas and in three new derivations, in both hi and low top styles, and as full leather versions.

Vita-Parcours (1974): With original identifiable black and white check pattern and produced with a modernised sneaker sole, used in Bally’s Heimberg collection. A more urban shoe, the sneaker comes in its original form and three additional fabrications for men.

Galaxy (1983): Reissued and is now Bally’s lightest sneaker, crafted in canvas with suede detail. The original model in garnet has been reproduced alongside two new versions in Kodak and black, with the original running sole.

Competition (1983): Produced with the same shape, lining, and sole as the original shoe from 1983. The replica is available alongside four additional derivations in Kodak, garnet, marine, and snuff.

Othello: All-white leather sneaker with thick sole, featuring a chevron tonal stitch detail.

Horson: New structure with chunky Para sole, inspired by the traditional Wallabee boot. The boot is constructed with the technical addition of a neoprene sock and contrast laces. Available in suede and Antwerp (black coated leather which is brushed off for a mottled effect).

Bally’s retro sneaker collection is available in stores and online from January 2018 onwards.

Men’s Bags

Men’s bags have a very sporty, functional feel.

Slam: This sporty, retro collection of cross body and holdall bags is tennis inspired featuring three core styles: Kanye, Fred, and Smash. All feature zipped compartments, Bally Stripe fabric straps and the Bally Script logo from 1908, originally used on the soles of Bally women’s shoes. Colours include Bone, Kodak, and Ink.

Bold: This technical nylon collection of backpacks, holdalls, and totes features a bold Bally logo on a Nastro ribbon.

Marquee: This collection is inspired by classic vintage luggage. Styles include the Ellington (Square crossbody silhouette) and the Rayn (Weekender).

Canvas Totes: XL canvas totes feature the Bally Script logo from 1908.

BALLY SPRING SUMMER 2018 WOMEN’S COLLECTION

SS18 Moodboard

The collection is inspired by the urban, street culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s New York City. A young world emerges with graffiti artists, musicians, and creatives forming their own identity through underground movements, unaware they are on the cusp of social and cultural revolution. Stripped walls, scarce belongings, and sparse furniture recall a carefree lifestyle from a previous era. NY apartment references Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe.

Collection narrative – Women’s

She is secure. She is aware. She grabs and she goes.

The Bally woman evolved from the backdrop of a male dominated, urban landscape and she expresses herself with a laidback elegance and poise. She is quietly confident – captured in inconsequential moments through an all-encompassing lens.

The narrative of the collection

Retro sportswear is reinterpreted. A contrasting mood of sophistication and sport feature varied proportions of juxtaposed fabrics. Chains feature on ladies large leather accessories and shoes, discreetly playing on the idea of overstated 80s style gold jewellery. Repetition of 1980s Bally logos, revived from archival typography and graphics take prominence throughout, taking us back to an era of confident self-expression. There is movement throughout.

Shoes: Bally’s retro sneakers set the mood of the collection. Composed of four replicas of the brands most successful lace ups, from hip-hop era classics to original tennis shoes, these include the SuperSmash (1965), Vita-Parcours (1974), Competition (1983), and Galaxy (1983). The nappa Baby Tubo long leather boot and Serrano Lux chain sandal are also key elements to the collection.

Bags: Bally’s Saddle bag is constructed of soft Buttero Lux leather, featuring the iconic B-Turn lock closure. Natural Canvas totes with contrasting trimming feature a 1908 Bally script logo. The keyhole bag made from Grace Lux leather features a new keyhole hardware closure, also appearing on ladies small leather accessories. We want to talk about this keyhole feature as part of the story. The ‘80s opened up a new world for Bally, the brand gained recognition. The new hardware design is symbolic of this.

Ready-to-wear: Highlights include full length fitted leather coats dyed in soft hues and oversized shapes composed of structured fabrics. Pyjama tops and bottoms in floral jacquard and archival B logo printed silk. Light nappa windbreakers and silk habotai tracksuits are both complimented by tucked in sports socks and all white sneakers. Mixed polyester double bonded jacquard.

Techniques, textures and fabrics

Techno cotton and double bonded polyester jacquard. Wool canvas trousers and Silk habotai tracksuits. Viscose and cashmere knit. Shearling and fur collars. Nappa baby leather boots and  thick chain shoulder bags.

Women’s Shoes

Retro sneakers are her everyday choice.

Alongside the retro sneaker collection, slouchy leather boots and chain detail sandals are a focus.

This season, slouchy, knee high nappa Baby Tubo long boots showcase the finest leather alongside heeled, 70s style ankle boots, featuring leather strap detail or laced up with ribbon.

Serrano Lux chain sandals with yellow gold hardware detail, worn with socks add to the retro feel of the collection. This 80s style sandal features block heel with B oblique. The chain detailing mirrors that across accessories and ready-to-wear. Babouche remains a commercial focus updated with a finer 1960s archive inspired buckle which inspired the Maelle style.

Leather shoulder bags are the focus of the collection.

B-Turn: Tender and canvas top handle with detachable strap and B-Turn lock closure, quilted canvas sides, and perforation on the front panel.

Minibag: Thick chain shoulder bag featuring iconic B-Turn lock closure.
